Saturday, April 9, 2011, saw the Prague Hibernians host their football tournament in Slavia rugby grounds. Played in great conditions for football, teams from Prague, Warsaw and Vienna Gaels competed for the coveted titles.

There were teams from the aforementioned regions in both the ladies and men’s competitions. Warsaw completed the double on the day and were deserved winners overall, in what was a very sporting tournament.

It was fantastic to see the Prague Hibettes also field a team on the day, and they were very unlucky to lose to Warsaw in a hugely competitive final. The Hibettes had 11 girls on the panel, with a great mixture of international students and local girls togging out on the day.

The men’s tournament saw Prague Hibernians, Warsaw and Vienna Gaels do battle in some very closely contested battles, with Prague and Warsaw emerging to make it to the final. What a final it was! Warsaw took the title on the day, but the Hibs put up a hugely spirited performance on the day. Warsaw’s Paddy Thompson deservedly took the ‘Player of the Tournament’ accolade following the final.

The women’s final was equally as exciting, with Prague Hibettes and Warsaw involved in what was certainly the game of the tournament. The Hibettes drafted in a few of the Vienna players due to injury, and the girls were desperately unlucky not to steal the win from Warsaw. However, it was a fantastic performance from the Warsaw girls, and it was a nail-biting conclusion to the day.

Afterwards, players and coaches from all days went to the after-party in the Dubliner Bar and Restaurant in the city, in what was a most enjoyable night for all. Well done to all involved!
